In Florida, we see a lot of pet eye issues, and not just because pets are outside more. Between year-round pollen, bright UV exposure, sand, humidity, and salt air, our climate can be surprisingly tough on eyes. 

If you have a Frenchie or Bulldog in Southwest Florida, there’s a good chance you’ve either seen cherry eyes, or you will. That little pink bubble in the corner of the eye? It’s super common in these breeds. Now let’s break it down.

If you’ve ever owned a Frenchie with chronic tearing, a Shih Tzu with squinty eyes, or a Cocker Spaniel who seems prone to eye infections, you’re not imagining it. Certain dog breeds are genetically predisposed to eye conditions.

The year-round Florida sunshine is amazing, but Florida pollen? Not exactly. If your dog’s eyes are suddenly red, watery, or constantly being rubbed on the couch, seasonal allergies could be to blame. In Southwest Florida’s warm, humid climate, allergens like grass, tree, and weed pollen are almost always out there. 

Earlier this year, I opened the doors to my very own veterinary ophthalmology practice, and what a start it has been! I’ve been overwhelmed by the support, trust, and kindness of our clients, patients, and referring veterinarians in Southwest Florida.
